
Veterinarian Technician - Full Time

Reid Park Zoological Society is seeking a licensed veterinarian technician to join our Animal Care Team. Reid Park Zoo, located in beautiful Tucson, Arizona is a mid-sized, regional zoological garden caring for over 200 exotic animal species from around the world in lush, naturalistic habitats. With a mission centered in conservation, the Zoo is Accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and participates in nearly 100 Species Survival Plans for threatened and endangered species. Reid Park Zoo maintains a state-of-the-art elephant program, a cutting-edge veterinary clinic that serves as a teaching hospital for the University of Arizona veterinary program, and is the co-leader of the Flamingo SAFE program to name a few recognitions. Overview: Responsible for the Reid Park Zoo’s Animal Health Center and the animals under veterinarian care.
Reports To: Chief Veterinarian
Responsibilities to include but not limited to:
- Support personnel for veterinarians both on and off site
- Updating zoo’s medical records and prescriptions
- Accurately calculate and properly dispense medications per DVM instruction
- Oversee the ordering of supplies and inventory management to include all pharmacy stock
- Provide patient care for quarantined and/or hospitalized animals which requires an in depth understanding of variety of species
- Manage and maintain hospital equipment
- Manage and maintain the upkeep of the hospital facility
- Assist the staff veterinarian as well as veterinary interns and externs on cases.
- Prepare samples to be delivered to diagnostic labs
- Active member of the animal emergency response team, including ability to operate darting equipment
- Maintain controlled drug inventory and logs compliant with DEA standards
- Ensure compliance with radiology, laser and other state/national associations
- Other tasks as assigned
- Perform duties in accordance with RPZS and RPZ policies such as completing expense reports and managing budget lines
- Maintaining documentation for repairs and preventive maintenance of diagnostic equipment involving local, state and federal compliance
- Hospital inventory management - ensure equipment/supplies, lab materials and medications are in date and in stock at all times
- Provide excellent customer service as a component of all job duties
Administrative Functions
Minimum Requirements, Qualifications, Skills and Abilities
- Current AZ State Veterinary Technician License
- Minimum of 4 years clinical background, exotic animal experience
- Current (2024-2025) COVID-19 Booster, and annual COVID boosters required
- Pre-employment drug screen (we test for illicit drugs, not THC)
- Pre-employment TB test or evidence of negative TB test result within the immediate past 12 months, and annual TB test required thereafter
- Valid, unrestricted driver license
- Strong computer skills with proficiency in MS Word, Excel
- The ability to lift 50 lbs and pass a pre-employment physical exam
- Demonstrated critical analysis, customer service, problem solving, conflict resolution, decision making, leadership, team building, time management, and motivational skills
- Demonstrated ability to tactfully handle stressful situations, negotiate and resolve conflicts, maintain confidentiality and to respect and observe organizational protocol
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with all levels of RPZ staff as well as diverse volunteers, donors, community partners, vendors and others
- Able to work a flexible work schedule and adjust as required; hours may involve weekends, holidays and evenings
- Regular and consistent attendance at work
- Other duties as assigned
